The Production Design industry is vast. It includes many unique individuals, who each have their own unique style. Here, I have listed my top ten favourite and most noteworthy production designers to help you learn more about the industry.
1) Stuart Craig - Harry Potter, The English Patient

Yes, its true, I am a Harry Potter addict. But who can blame me when the works and designs of Stuart Craig are so appealing?
Aside working on all the Harry Potter films, Craig has also worked on Dangerous Liaisons, The English Patient (warning: you'll need tissues), and Gandhi, all for which he won Academy Awards. He has also won two BAFTA awards, the first for The Elephant Man, and the second for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Craig has also been nominated for an Art Directors Guild for the following films:
- The English Patient (won)
- Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (won)
The Guild has also honoured Craig with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the awards ceremony on 16 February 2008.
2) Rick Carter - Avatar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic Park

Rick Carter, the worlds most famous production designer, has certainly seen his fair share of all the different genres. His work - which includes box office hits such as Avatar and Forrest Gump, would not be as successful as they are without him.
He has won two Academy Awards, the first for Lincoln, and the second for Avatar, which he also won a British Academy Film Award for. Rick was nominated an Academy Award for Forest Gump, War Horse, Avatar and Lincoln. He won the awards for the last two. He has been nominated the British Academy Film Award four times and has won once with Avatar.
3) Dennis Gassner

After taking over from Peter Lamont (see below) as the production designer for the Bond films, Dennis Gassner has become a house hold name in the film industry.
Gassner has been nominated for an Academy Award seven times with the films Barton Fink, Bugsy, Road to Perdition, The Golden Compass, Into the Woods, Blade Runner 2049 and 1917. He won the award for Bugsy.
He was also nominated for the Art Directors Guild Award for Excellence in production design for Quantum of Solace.
4) Peter Lamont

Alongside Rick Carter, Peter Lamont is one of the world's most well known production designers. Having been in the industry since the 50s, Lamont has also worked as a set decorator and art director.
He is mainly known for being the production designer for most of the Bond films until he retired in 2006, two years after the production and release of Casino Royale.
Lamont has been nominated four times with the films:
- Fiddler on the Roof
- The Spy Who Loved Me
- Aliens
- Titanic
He won the award for Titanic.
5) Hannah Beachler

Hannah Beachler is an upcoming American production designer who has most recently been known for the film Moonlight.
Her other work includes Creed, Black Panther and Miles Ahead.
Hannah won an Academy Award for the best production design for the film Black Panther. She is the first African-American to win.
